Osteoporosis and Bone Health
Bone Up On Your Diet
(Excerpts from the Surgeon General's Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis are in quotes*):
"Bone Up On Your Diet"
The Surgeon General's Report links to a simple calcium calculator that can help us figure out how much calcium we need as a supplement, and even if you need a calcium supplement at all.
The calculator does not include some excellent plant sources, however, and it relies heavily on dairy; I suggest you use it as an indicator of how simple it can be to get the calcium we need through everyday foods.
The current research is showing us the plants we eat are the best sources of all the minerals we need, including calcium.
Between plants and dairy products, though, our food is the best source of calcium and all the minerals we need for strong bone. If we don't get enough calcium from our food, then we need a supplement to supply the balance of our daily needs.
"Calcium"
"To keep your bones strong, eat foods rich in calcium.
Some people have trouble digesting the lactose found in milk and other dairy foods, including cheese and yogurt.
"Many non-dairy foods are also calcium-rich."
"Vitamin D"
"Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. As you grow older, your need for vitamin D goes up. Vitamin D is made by your skin when you are in the sun.
"For many, especially seniors, getting enough vitamin D from sunshine is not practical. Almost all milk and some other foods are fortified with vitamin D.
"If you are not getting enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet, supplements can be bone savers."
The Surgeon General's report links to a page at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) site regarding the best source of calcium(see #6).
According to the CDC and other respected sources regarding osteoporosis, "The best way for minerals, like calcium, to enter the body is through food. Food also provides other minerals and vitamins that are important for bone health, as well as for overall health."
You have within you the innate ability to become more well, more healthy, using simples tools - good nutrition and a little physical activity.
Remember, osteoporosis can be reversed. You've got what it takes, you really do.
