Basic Vitamin Facts
- The term vitamin comes from two other words - the words vital and amine.
- Vitamins are required for life and were originally thought to be amines, an organic compound that contains nitrogen. It was later discovered that not all vitamins are amines.
- However, all vitamins were discovered to be natural compounds that are required by humans in small amounts in order to sustain life.
- Humans need vitamins to live. Vitamins are necessary for our bodies to function normally and express good health.
- We cannot synthesize or make them ourselves in adequate amounts to maintain healthy normal function, but we can get vitamins conveniently from common foods we eat.
- Humans cannot form vitamins inside our own bodies. (Vitamin D is an unusual exception.)
- An organic compound is considered a vitamin if a lack of it in the diet results in symptoms of deficiency that ultimately creates a disease.
- Thirteen essential vitamins have been isolated and these are divided into two categories, water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.
- The water-soluble vitamins include Vitamin C and the group of B-Vitamins.
- The water-soluble vitamins are not stored by the body and can be quickly depleted, especially with illness or the stress of daily life.
- The fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K remain in the body for longer periods of time.
- The water-soluble vitamins are easily destroyed or washed out during food storage and preparation.
- Vitamins come from a variety of sources, including commonly foods, both plants and animal products, as well as from certain normal bacteria that live in the gut.
- Vitamin D is a remarkable exception as noted above. We can easily produce our own vitamin D, and all it requires is a simple exposure of our skin to natural sunlight, which then interacts with the natural good cholesterol in our body to produce vitamin D.
- If skin is not exposed to sunlight, vitamin D cannot be formed. However, vitamin D can be obtained through other sources such as eggs, fatty fish, or in supplements.
- The types of claims that can be made on the labels of dietary supplements and drugs differ.
- Drug manufacturers may claim that their product will diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent a disease.
- Such claims may not legally be made for dietary supplements, despite the common knowledge and centuries-old historical records of diseases being cured by food and herbs being used as medicine.
- Supplement ingredients sold in the United States before October 15, 1994, are not required to be reviewed by FDA for their safety before they are marketed because they are presumed to be safe based on their history of use by humans.
- Remember, most of us need to supplement our diets to make sure we give our bodies what we need for normal function and optimal health.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, most of us don't get the vitamins and minerals our bodies require from our food, and for that reason we need to supplement what we are missing in order to maintain optimal health.
