Exercises for Osteoporosis

Stop or Reverse the Bone Loss
of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia

There is no question about it, bone loss can be stopped and reversed.

Exercise and nutrition are two things in our lives that we control; using them can change the direction of our health.

The research is very clear about this, and any form of exercise will help us become more healthy.

Exercises for Osteoporosis

The well known term 'Use-It-Or-Lose-It' is quite true. 'Life is motion' is a similar term, also true; and if we want to stay alive, we had better get moving.

Weight-bearing exercises for osteoporosis are commonly what we read or hear about. But lifting weights is not the only way to develop stronger bones.

For example, some doctors say that swimming will not strengthen bones, because it is not 'weight-bearing'. They say it is not weight-bearing because your body is suspended in water which removes most of the effects of gravity.

That only holds true if you are simply floating in the water. The act of swimming, even treading water, uses muscles differently than when you are out of the water. This puts pressure on the bones in a way that stimulates bone renewal, bone growth, and increased bone density.

The same is true for other 'simple' exercises done for other reasons. Yoga, tai chi, and others will increase muscle tone, joint flexibility, and bone density as well. Although these are done to become more limber, or to improve coordination, they also are exercises for osteoporosis because they improve 'bone-tone' as a secondary beneficial effect.

'No Pain, No Gain' Is Over

Exercise does NOT need to be painful to be effective. The latest, best exercises for osteoporosis has to do with vibration... very gently, very effective.

Research is showing that gains in bone density and bone strength can be accomplished by minimal activity if done on a regular basis. Even people with fragile bones can benefit from the simple act of standing.

The key is doing something, rather than nothing. 'Nothing' does not work as an exercise for osteoporosis... 'almost anything else' does work.

Every one of us is different, so we each will have a different starting point for improving bone health.

Each of us has different goals, and interests, as well. Some people enjoy lifting weights, and others find it boring.

Your starting point and the type of activity you choose will be directed by factors such as your goals, what you enjoy doing, what you would like to be able to do, your current fitness and ability, etc.

It all starts with a decision, and the best decisions are based on knowledge.
