Bone Basics

"Bone Basics" is how Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona’s 400-page Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis begins.

He knows that basic information leads to a better understanding of osteoporosis.

Dr. Carmona's information is a little more technical than ours. But we're doing the same thing on these pages to define a few terms, with pictures to help explain.

The reason is simple: In order to understand an abnormal condition (low bone density, osteoporosis, and osteopenia), it always helps to know what normal is.

Dr. Carmona reports there are significant gaps in knowledge, which means we don’t have all the answers.

He also says too little of what has been learned thus far about bone health has been applied in practice. As a result, the bone health status of Americans is poorer than it should be.

"Perhaps the biggest problem is a lack of awareness among both the public and health care professionals, many of whom do not understand the magnitude of the problem, let alone the ways in which bone disease can be prevented and treated." (emphasis mine)

Dr. Carmona also says "great improvements in the bone health status of Americans can be made by applying what is already known" and "that individuals can do a great deal to promote their own bone health".
